Hey guys, My dad own's an sm58 that i sometimes borrow when recording. The thing is that the shure unidyne (90's model) that i use for live vocals and recording distorted guitar is pretty well gimped right now because it's developed a really low frequency that no eq can fix. i've tried the 58 on distorted guitar and i wasn't really fond of the tone, i actually prefered my shure unidyne. now i want to buy a new mic to use for recording distorted guitar and maybe double for live vocals (mostly back-up). I almost want to get another 58 because i'm really impressed with the quality for vocals and the look, however i want to buy an sm57 because it's something new and i've heard it's really great. BUT i also heard that if you unscrew the capsule on an sm58 it'll pretty much work like an sm57 but i kind of have my doubts about this one. Does anybody have any suggestions on what i should do? also i'm wondering about an audix i5 if you wanna plug that into what i've told you. any help would be deeply appreciated. Thanks! ;)

I'd go with the SM57, better for guitar sounds, in fact, really good for guitar sounds! also nice for vocals. If you can afford it, get a Beta 57 as they are even better and amazing for live vocals, even better than a standard 58, as well as being great for guitar work.

hey guys just thought i'd let you know i went with a beta 57a i got it today and it sounds amazing. some people said the frequiencies would be high but i think it sounds amazing. as for vocals it's just as good as the 58 or better and guitar it matches the sm57 and IMO holds up the low end a little better. cost me 200 bucks but it was worth it! thanks for the help guys without this thread i probably would have went with something different!

200 bucks? You can grab those off musicians friend for 100 bucks brand new. 119 bucks with a stand and cable! Where'd you get that 57 from?
